I know that musical tastes are as subjective as anything else in life, but can anyone recommend clubs and events where the music is curated with care and attention?

Without naming and shaming, the music in most of the clubs and events I've attended hasn't been great - we're talking lots of europop/almost happy hardcore being played really really loud. I attended one event recently where I heard the 'Vengabus' song 4 times. Arrrgh!

My version of 'decent' would include:

Funk/soul/disco/reggae/ska/new wave/house/electronica/ambient/classic rock/cool pop/hip hop/rnb/indie

Music makes such a difference to our mood and the atmosphere, even in play situations, so I'd be interested to hear where is getting it right?

I agree the music can be dire at some events. But you can’t please everyone. With there been such a vast mix of people, of all ages and tastes it’s always a difficult one. I’ve found for me if the atmosphere is decent I don’t mind the music so much.

I agree the atmosphere can make a big difference, but for me the music sets the tone for the rest of atmosphere and if it's not great I get really distracted and it can take me 'out' of the play headspace. Must be the dj in me!

There are a few clubs that offer themed music nights, seem some Ibiza ones advertised, country etc. places like TortureGarden and RiotParty (more kink) are a bit more club/sex crossover think Manumission glory days in Ibiza.

But unlike nightclubs swinging clubs are not centred around the music. The shared passion is the lifestyle in whatever form that takes for attendees, swinging, exhibitionism, kink etc.

Like you though I would like there to be a few more music themed events where the music was provided by a genre specific dj rather than a multi format DJ playing their tunes that fit the genre badly.

But it’s all about cost to the venues I guess.

Like you said, music taste is subjective and I wouldn’t enjoy a club that plays your decent genre music.

In my opinion, music in a swingers club should be background noise mostly. I’m not really there to dance.

Thanks for the comments. don't disagree with anything anyone has said or suggested, but also, I don't think I've explained myself very well.

I totally agree that the music isn't the main reason everyone goes to clubs (I've never once seen a full dancefloor in a club for example and it'd be a bit of a worry if everyone was dancing and not playing). But, even as background, music can make a big contribution to the ambience.

I was at an event recently, in an open playroom and the music was so loud and so out of step with the play that both I and others were trying to develop that in the end we had to stop. It was also impairing our ability to to communicate with each other, and I've experienced this a few times at different venues.

If an EMO night is your bag, we’ve got a great one coming up next month in September in Newcastle.

Depending on your tastes we’ve done a few musically themed events now all over the country.

We love to dance. Classic disco, soul from the late 60s and early to mid 70s, Erasure, Communards type stuff from the 80s. Lots of later stuff too. Makes for a great evening even in swinging clubs.

😂 I think most DJs at swingers clubs think everyone is about 40, so they play late 90's and 00's pop which was mainly cheesy r&b, and cheesy house.

Personally I'd love it to be mainly current vocal liquid D&B which has a great flow, and can also be pretty ambient, and I'd love to go to a rock/metal themed one, the heavier the better.

My tastes are eclectic as hell but soul, Motown, classic rock, r&b are for lovemaking, need something stronger to make the bed rock

As the DJ at Midnight Affairs at eureka I find it wise to play a variety of popular music - classic floor fillers combined with popular Ibiza tunes and modern classics. The music just creates the right vibe for play

Xtasia in West Brom is always good and does themed nights regularly from house to alt rock. Even on normal non themed nights Jay plays a good selection of tunes. Always accommodating with requests too.

We went to Xtasia, the music was that loud you couldn't speak to anyone

Xtasia is a very music/dance floor oriented club. It's a very good club (although not our vibe, we've more a Chameleons vibe personally). I would say alway a good club for those who like a night club vibe. Also a club we'd take curious vanilla freinds who would like to be eased within a more familiar environment. It's a bit like the sex positive night clubs in Europe.
