Forgive me for asking but what actually happens at a social meet in a club setting I thought that clubs are for social meets anyway

We've enjoyed a couple of planned social meets in a club. The main discernible differences are; the ability to progress there and then should you wish, and the ability to chat freely without being overheard.

However, both couples we met seemed to dislike that others in the club night want to say hello to us. :-\
