What's a couple?

I had planned to attend a Halloween event aimed at couples and single females. I was going as part of a couple with an NB partner presenting as femme that night. We discovered that we would have been turned away at the door because we weren't a cis couple.

How common is this, and should events be specific about what kinds of couples they'll accept? I'd be interested to hear about other people's experiences.

The club accepts mixed sex cis couples and single females. I don't see how the pair of you fail to fit into either category.
