Bans in the chatroom - what ban for what crime?

Hi Admin. There was a discussion in the SW room about bans people get for all sorts of offences. But there's nowhere on the site that lists what ban you may get for what offence. In the interests of having an open democratic website, please could you publish a list of the punishments relative to the crimes... Cheers, lop69

I am not sure what help it would be to be honest....as unless people are about to break rules then it wouldn't apply to most people.

Once a person does get a ban though they get a mail telling them how long the ban will be for.

I suppose it could go the other way and they might think " ah it is only 4 hours, I will chance it "

Yep... the amount for what crime...I see people getting week bans or hour bans.. No rhyme or reason for what fits what crime. Any 3 strikes and you're out rule? Transparency is what I'm after....

We don't intend to publish a list but the principle is the worse the transgression the longer the timeout.

And at Admin's discretion, if someone is repeatedly breaking room rules, we issue longer bans and warnings.

Trouble is (in the forums) it seems to be (1)which mod sees it, (2) how each different mod sees it, (3) how each different mod interprets it (4) different mods seem to have different timeout scales.

there seems to be no set rules, it just seems to depend on the above.

and, in the forums, some of the indiscretions are so trivial, why is there a need for a timeout when it is oh so easy just to remove what the mod decides is an unsuitable post and maybe a quick mail to the poster saying you cant put that because ... etc?

It doesn't work like that, it's not at the mods discretion at all. The mod chooses a timeout reason (e.g. directing) and the system automatically applies the correct timeout (1hr in this case) and mails the user explaining what the timeout is for and how long it lasts.

but (forums, we dont use chatrooms) there is no chance of appeal if you disagree and think it unfair, i have tried the contact button and all the other methods but we get no response from you.

last ban i got was for asking if anyone else had a nasty email from someone being abusive in a forum, many replied with a yes, yet we were the only ones with a 48 hour !!!! timeout for "airing our dirty laundry in public"

it wasn't even our laundry but to us a perfectly acceptable question.

as mentioned previously, maybe it was debateable wether it was an acceptable post or not, the point is, would just removing the post be more adequate?

Sorry, this thread was about chat bans hence the confusion.

The problem with just removing a problem post is that it doesn't provide the poster with any chance for reflection (or reason why the post was removed, or any incentive not to do the same post again). The timeouts work just the same as in chat, the mods choose a reason along with explanation and the system issues the timeout that Admin has decided on.

For the most part if you don't take the forums too seriously and check out the rules you can't go far wrong:
