Does anyone know how one person can appear in multiple chat rooms at the same time when you can only type in one?

I have regularly seen user accounts in as many as 5 rooms. Is it just from switching rooms really quickly so the chat engine hasn't realised they have left the original room? How long does it take an echo to disappear?

If a user doesn't click X on exiting a room they remain in it even tho theyve switched rooms.....been like that as long as i can remember.
