"You will sometimes find that people are not chatting in public, they are in private PMs. This can often lead to the impression that no one is chatting, but in fact there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Not really the point of chat rooms though "

Not really the point of chat rooms though " So what is the point of a chatroom then? As far as I see it a chatroom is an online social space where people can choose to interact should they want to. Much like a pub is a real life social space where people can choose to interact should they want to. It would be very rare that you would walk into a busy pub and find everyone involved in one large conversation. It is far more likely that there will be a series of smaller conversations happening simultaneously. Some of those conversations will be load and you will be able to hear them from some distance away. Others will be far more private and not be able to be heard by all and sundry. If you take a moment to look around, you'll probably notice somepeople sat all alone, not talking to anyone, but maybe just people watching. Sounds exactly like the chat room to me. Why should an online social space be any different to a real world social space?

"The chat rooms have disintegrated into mostly guys hiding off camera insisting those on cam show their tits, shove a dildo up their ass etc. scared, anonymous wanking dead who think others are just there for their entertainment. It has been worse than usual for this lately. Shame, because it can be lots of fun. "
