Depends what you consider "across Canada" - if you are including Newfoundland, you'd need at least a week... Halifax to Victoria, meh, still probably a week. It's the second largest country in the world.

I'm Canadian and have been everywhere - tell me what you want to see and I'll tell you where to go

Nottingham/and everywhere my location says i am ;)

Couple of years ago did it.. Landed in Nova Scotia, and trekked all the way to Victoria.. Spent my entire visitor visa allowance ( 6months ) and I still had to make painful choices on what to see an what to swerve.

Best advice I got was in a bar in Edmonton from a retired Mountie, a hippie and the token piss artist.. Gave me some wicked off the beaten track places that i would be passing.

Defo do the island though.. It's like a condensed Canada just a bit smaller than Britain. Hire a forestry pick up truck in Nanaimo and take off Notth. Hit the logging roads and see it wild. I stood on a point, watching black bears fish, grey whales migrate and the resident orca's swimming off Raft Cove. Unforgettable

Ok I planning on starting on east coast I won't do Newfoundland and plan on going to Vancouver , plan is to allow 3 weeks ,think I'll hire a camper and drive , I would like to visit some smaller towns along the way , basically the one horse towns that tourists don't go , if there is such a thing , Calgary and lake Louise are a must , but after that I open to suggestions ,

Seriously.. Forget Lake Louise.. It's a nightmare.. Instead drive up and take the road of to moraine lake. Much nicer. Or Peyto Lake. The colours are outstanding and ten times less of the selfie brigades spoiling things.

Lake Louise is gorgeous with the chateau lake Louise in the background, and there's a nice trek up to a tea house above it. Depending on which month the OP goes, it's not always nightmare. July & August are busiest.

I'm not saying it isn't, I loved it but I found other places much nicer and not as commercialised.

It's like chitzen itza. Outstanding place but completely killed for the coin it brings, go three miles down the road to Ek Balam and see it raw, cheaper and more enjoyable. It's just my opinion

There was a few when I went. Be ready to dodge the hundreds of tour buses!

Three weeks isn't enough!!!

Time it so you visit Calgary for the Stampede...will be busy but worth it.

Okanagan Valley in BC is beautiful.

If you fancy some retail therapy (and a big detour) go to the West Edmonton Mall.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Fort MacLeod AB & Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller AB are well worth a visit.

You'll spend a lot of time on the road if you want to do it in 3 weeks, although I did work out once that I could drive from East to West in 10 days....but 500kms plus a day was far too much.

As above, Alberta is full of contrasts. Drumheller is fantastic if you like dinosaurs. Lots of "big sky" driving there as well. Calgary is only really worth going to for the Stampede. Its big and brash and very very busy! One of those things you only do once really.

Further West, a must is the Icefields Parkway drive. You'll see mountains, waterfalls, lakes and glaciers. One of life's "must do" drives. Stop at Field and Spiral Tunnels, and watch the huge freight trains cross over themselves.

Head for Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. (but keep this a secret). Some of the best wines and fruit you'll ever eat and drink. A warm micro-climate down there. Swim in the lake, watch life go by slowly.

Leave via the Crows Nest Highway to Hope. Another stunning drive over the mountains. Highway to Vancouver and Stanley Park, the First Nations museum at UCB, breweries galore, and funky shops.

Drive up the Sunshine Coast and take ferries through the mountains.

You'll get plenty of advice and thoughts from guidebooks. Yes, the tourist "traps" that they highlight are worth doing but they are popular. Its one of my favourite places to holiday, but do your research. But the prizes are well worth it....Little roadside cafes serving great home cooked pie, always with the warmest welcome, bears by the side of the road, small towns with farmers markets, and a pace of life so much slower than our own!
