Hope to do the whw next month feb/March

I have 2&3 man tents but think they are abit big for solo camping along the way, what have you lot used when doing it? Was looking at a highlander blackthorn tent

I've only looked at pictures but it looks like one you put the inner up first and the fly sheet over? Personally not a fan of this arrangement in wet weather because its more difficult to keep the inner dry when erecting. I think there are other options in the same price range with external poles (doing a quick Google search).

That's my unexperienced opion as I've not used these type of tent before. All my solo camping has been in my previous profession and just involved sleeping under a bivi sheet. However I know the importance of keeping kit dry while setting up and thus my concern of this tent design.

Great point as chances are it will be wet n cold when I do whw. Will have a Google of fly sheet first tents . Don't want a single skin tent as condensation will be major prob in cold weather.

All depends on budget. The saying of you get what you pay for comes to mind.

The tent you have in mind only appears to have a 2000 HH. That might struggle with wet and windy Scottish weather.

Also a little extra weight should give you additional space for kit and cooking in as opposed to something that might be more suited to a quick one night dash out in the hills.

Personally I would look at something like a Wild Country Helm 1 or 2 for what you are intending to do

If you like the blackthorn design, and you're looking at that kind of price, I'd go for the oex phoxx 1 instead, basically the same but better quality and higher 'head' rating 😉😈 most quality backpacking tents are inner first, I've never had a problem with them and do it regularly in real shitty weather 😂😂. Personally I like quality equipment so spend a lot more, and take another half kilo weight hit even when solo, terra nova voyager is a top recommendation, and my first one lasted 20 years before needing a replacement... Good luck with the whw, the first day is an absolute ankle breaker 😂😂😂

Look at the alpkit soloist. A great lightweight tent. At not a bad price especially if you catch it on offer. Alpkit also have some other great options.

I use a Durston x-mid 1, solid interior. It’s a trekking pole tent so very light and a brilliant design. Pitches all in one, but you can separate the fly from the inner if you want. It’s a great bit of kit.

Got myself a wee bobcat 1 perfect for a solo hike ..was thinking of doing WHW in April but have decided to do it in stages ... Milngavie to drymen first then maybe two weeks later drymen to rowardennan.. etc etc ..

overall "highlander" is a cheap tent and is fit for festival use. a good tent that will last you will be some thing like MSR hubba, durston mid, vango, alpkit, any brand that is designed for the hills.

as for size you always buy +1 so get a 2 person tent for solo use then you can have all your gear in the tent and not have to leave it outside in bad weather

I picked up a Terra Nova Competition which was apparently a Go outdoors special.

I did the WHW in November a few years ago 😂 should have taken the 2 man but I quite enjoyed the morning laugh as I sat up, skinning the inner with the hood of my sleeping bag and making it snow inside 😂

I use a Berghaus cairngorm 2, packs nice and small but plenty of room. Cant fault it really.
