It really varies depending on the day you are crossing, the route you are taking and which VW you have…ie swb or lwb…if you look at the Brittany Ferries website you can mess about and get prices and can pick and choose which ports to go out from and back from (doesnt have to be the same - so you could do Poole-Cherbourg out and say St Malo- Portsmouth back). You have to enter the vehicle as a van and if dimensions are different to their guess you then get the option to pick alternative size.

We have done it regularly and find Newhaven to Dieppe the best route. There is a ferry that leaves around midnight so you get a few good hours sleep and arrive in France (a couple of hours south of Calais)early in the morning, ready for a decent days driving rather than arriving knackered.
