Cavan Monaghan

Every year, coast road getting over crowded as more an more viewing restrictions every year, if you’re on the inside of the circuit you can move about, can be great racing if the weather is good, I enjoy the smaller races alot more

Thinking of doing this instead of the TT as it's got too commercial orientated for me. Enjoyed the old days of going to have a chat with the riders in the pits.

My favourite race. I always start at york corner and work my way up past the stop/start.

The one thing I didn't like.... they were charging the public to get into the paddock ....

If you think the TT is comercialised wait till you get to the NW

You can still walk round the paddock and chat with riders pit crew and anyone else who will give you their time. Sometimes they are just to busy working on the bikes but you can still stand and watch. That's how we got to meet Keith Flint couple of years ago, god rest his soul. Agree its not as crazy as it used to be but don't see the commercial you are talking about. People have always tried to make a buck at TT but you can go and watch racing, mix with pit crew and it doesn't have to cost you a penny. On the whole you can spend as little or as much as you like @ TT, well once you have had all your money took from you from The Steam Packet that is, but that's a different discussion

I remember when there was twice as many races run an you were on the road for home round 4, now with half the races more interviews to many celebrities on the grid you’d be lucky to get away by 6

In the 80s I was mechanic to a racer and we raced many, many times in NI, Ulster GP, NW200, Carrowdore, Kirkistown and a few others, loved racing there, most friendly race fans anywhere

I remember when the northwest was fun.. everyone was d*unk in the farmers fields, actual bikers who brought tents and pitches for the weekend for a fiver and every year someone fell off the cliff... good times

When your attracting the big teams from BSB and the the top riders its always going to get more commercial as these events are international road races and cost clubs a fortune to run to have the big teams and names attend, they never make a profit and rarely break even but the bigger they get the higher the running costs. The NW200 has gotten just a lot more commercial in recent years too and the event has been stretch out over a week from what used to be a weekend event. You can still walk the paddoc and get up close and even meet the riders but if your trying to do that on a race day with big crowds and the pressure riders are under to get results they may not always be as open to interact and meet fans which is understandable.

Friday at the NW is a paddoc open day with no racing or practice (this may change depending on events/weather during the week) and these are the best days to walk the paddoc and meet teams and riders when everything is that bit more relaxed.

NW is a fantastic event and one of only 2 internationals in Ireland and I attend whenever I can. The UGP is the no1 for me though, much more challenging and exciting circuit and the speeds, it is the fastest road race in the world!! But yes it is getting a bit commercial also and some vantage points have been restricted in recent years but understandable when you see how fast and exciting the racing is and safety 1st always. You can't beat the likes of Cookstown, Tandragee, Armoy, Skerries, Walderstown, Kells and so on for accessibility and meeting the riders...they still have that old school road racing feel about them and living in Ireland I am lucky to be able to attend and soak it up while you still can

I've been asked if I'll organise a team at the northwest this year, so depending on when I'm out there I can do brews in the paddock

Keep us posted on the team news.

To be honest having lived on IoM for ten years and been to NW200 on and off for twenty I think both of them are now too commercialised and becoming a tick list or a stag weekend event. But that’s the way the modern corporate world is, as long as H&S doesn’t keep getting too inhibiting it’s still an amazing sport to participate in or watch.

Weather was shit and cold as fuck, was glad to have the comfort of a campervan in circuit to keep in out of the weather during the delays and between races and felt sorry for those that had to sit out in it all day.

Top 10 finish in stockers eh, I am guessing you were with Chris Green or Mathew Rees
