Surface rust question

Hi fellow Fab Bikers.

Prepping the bike (z1000sx) to get back using as my commuter. Bike been stored in garage but sadly have found some surface rust on some of the metal clips and few other bits. Nothing structural etc.

Any suggestions on how to remove?

I'm a car guy, but I used to soak parts in coca cola and rub them with aluminium foil to remove surface rust.

I'm sure there's some more chemical engineering minded folks on here who have a better suggestion, but it worked for me.

Try some scrunched up tinfoil. If that doesnt work its autosol …….

I ended up using some 400 grit wet & dry on a chrome headlamp surround yesterday and that came up quite nicely.

Once you’ve cleaned the rust off use something like ACF50 to treat it and prevent it rusting again.

I like to spray a bit into the lid and use a small brush to apply it directly to the area

Pink stuff cream in the tubs. Cheap and works a charm even on exhaust manifolds as long as they aren’t too far gone

Should have said, the rust is on metal clips etc that are meant to be black.

Scrub down and then paint again?

I've used Halfords satin black with good results , have paint and parts warm when you spray- makes a difference

as said Tim foil. or a scotch bright pad,

12 quid for a can of bulldog bdx it a penetrative oil designed for the off shore industry ...that will displace the rust with adjitarion and its leaves a protective coating on the metal..

little goes a long way with that stuff... and it beats most other things for ceased up bolts ..exhaust studs on headers etc ect
