"My advice would be as follows... 1) Set a budget for upfront expenses such as the bike, protective gear, security, insurance and tax. 1b) Consider ongoing costs such as servicing, parts, MOT, fuel etc. 2) An older / used bike will already have suffered depreciation. Plus you won't be so precious about getting a scratch or dent on it. Plus it's slightly less attractive to scummy thieves. 3) An upright commuter type won't be as exciting but you'll have better low speed control and all round vision than a race replica. 4) Consider the road types you mostly travel on. Town centres are a very different experience to shoddy B roads and muddy countryside. 5) Realise this is just the first of many bikes you'll own and it's not a life choice. 6) Think what appeals to you and makes you excited to look at...
