Gear Shift Difficulties Advice

Hello bikers,

I’m just wondering if anyone can give me some advice about some trouble I’m having with my bike.

My gear pedal can be really stiff, and I struggle to shift, sometimes. This has gone on for a while, but because it is intermittent, I keep putting it down to user error - clutch cable needs adjusting, not pulling it in properly, wrong rev count to shift, etc. But, more recently, I have started to have trouble getting my bike into neutral. The foot pedal goes really stiff, and I miss neutral, and shift straight up to second, when it finally moves. So I try to shift down into neutral from second, and again, the pedal is really stiff, and it clunks down into 1st, and misses neutral again.

Can anyone give me any advice as to how I can fix this?

Lube the hinge on the shifter, check the clutch reservoir in full and bleed it fully as a start. After that if you are ok with a set of spanner’s, bits will need to come off.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the chain, and the tension is fine. Reservoir seems ok, but I think I’ll replace the fluid anyway. I was hoping to get some time to look at the shifting mechanism, to make sure that it isn’t damaged.

I’m just hoping I don’t have to check the entire clutch and gear cogs. I’ll need help for that. Lol

It’s a Honda NC750S.

Are the issues only happening when the engine / oil is hot, cold or both?

An oil change would be my initial offering but agree with 2nd post that the shift mech may need lube or cleaning.

After that it could be internal.

If not put it into a specialist. The price motorbike repairs compared to cars and vans it cheap considering the tools required for the job. I own my own workshop but will happy take my 5 bike to a specialist due to tooling

Chain tension springs to mind , I know you've said you've checked it but could be you've got one tight spot which would explain the intermittent problem.

Sounds like the clutch is dragging

Probably due to air in the system or a lazy cylinder is it cable or hydraulic clutch,

If it’s cable could need new cable

Yeh, I have thought this, too. Didn’t get a chance to have a look at it, today. Going on a big ride out to the Peak District, and beyond, tomorrow, so I will be paying attention to it.

Cable, but the cable is relatively new, so I dunno.

Fixed it! Had a good faff around with it, yesterday. I think that the clutch cable had slipped and wasn’t moving the lever enough.

Gears like butter, now!

Can be the clutch dragging. A number of reasons can cause this, some oils which are good for the engine are not great for clutch operation, they can cause the plates to stick to each other, another is the steel plates can warp slightly, I had that happen to me and it wrecked my head trying to figure out what it was
