My partner is going to be doing his CBT very soon, no prior bike experience and is looking at the Benelli 125. Does anyone have any experience with this bike or have any other recommendations?

He will have to keep ontop of the general maintenance with all chinese bikes. And would recommend replacing the chain and tyres ASAP. Also do the oil and filter mire often than it states in the book.

I race 125’s with freetech endurance.

We race a kTM rc125 and have had no problems except crash damage.

Did a 24 hour race and engine still run like a sewing machine.

Best all round bike in the series though is the Suzuki GSXR125.

Forget Benelli…. Honda CBF or a Yamaha YBR. Bulletproof, reliable and you’ll pretty much get your money back when you sell. I’d rather buy a ten year old CBF with 30k on the clock than a new Benelli

My son and I bought a Lexmoto LXR125 just after cbt but wanted a CBR or Aprilia but when it came down to it the Lexmoto was cheaper and 1 year old with 2k on the clock. Cheap isn't always better but getting out on the road was what it was all about. I did direct access and now we go out together and he still loves the feeling of getting out on 2 wheels even if it is for 18 months before he goes bigger.

Best recommendation would be, go to a bike dealer and get your bum on some seats. See what feels comfortable, its not a one bike fits all. Certainly recommendations would be go Japanese. Not sure which Benelli you are considering. If its the BN think about the kawasaki z125. If its the TNT think honda grom.

I'd go for a Honda CBF125, I've had quite a few Hondas over the years and never had any major issues.

Thanks for the recommendations. I know he eventually wants a Kawasaki Ninja, which itself has a 125. The Benelli was more just to get some practice in before he goes for mod1/mod2. I'll let him know thanks again.

Sat in a Benelli TNT in the local dealer last weekend.

Seemed OK, bit small if you have long legs as they would catch on the tank.

Interesting at £2400 new though.

125s get much abuse from mechanically unsympathetic 17 year olds so I'd be wary of buying a used one. The Benelli is old tech so simple to service.

Get a decent simple Japanese 125 pass your asap and get the bike you fancy after. 125 is a stepping stone we all did.

I have to agree,I passed mine on a 10 Yr old suzuki gs 125es and sold it for more than I paid for it.

As soon as you pass you'll want a quicker bike.

Honda CBR or CBF 125. Started off on a CBR R4 125. Easy and comfy to ride. Easy to find parts if you need and easy to maintain.

Look at second hand from yamaha or suziki or Honda. In all honesty there's no point sp3nding on a new 125 if you intend to move up. Ybr, cb, gs 125s all solid and you'll probably be able to sell on for pretty much what you paid

You can't go wrong with a honda or yamaha or suzuki they all have a good choice of 125 to choose from and different sizes if your tall or short

I only rode 2 stroke 125 bikes. A nice TZR125R and a rather sedate DT125R.

My advice is not to buy a new one, as he should hope to pass his bike test, then rrplace the bike with a bigger one fairly quickly.

Considering that he is learning, he might drop it once or twice, so it makes sense to buy a bike that he can get spares easily for.

My nephew has a KTM RC125 and he loves it, it's been reliable so far. It's a big bike for a 125, apparently it's the same frame as an RC390.

Avoid the cheap chinese ones like the plague............ One of the k*&s bought one after thier CBT and spent more on maintenance and parts that had rotted out than the bike was worth. When I started out, many many yrs ago, I had a CB125 twin that went on for yrs, I also had several suziki GP100 and 125's as they were easy to pick up and cheap. God luck with the CBT

Like so many I'm looking to get back on 2 wheels and need cbt as never did bike test in my youth. I'm also considering the 125cc for a while. I'm drawn to older honda or yamaha in preference to Chinese bikes. Although my son when younger had a lexmoto scooter and with correct maintenance it was very reliable.
