Is it still a monopoly on where is good and bad?

I used to go to two places, one was strict anything not right got failed. The other let things slide, as long as you promised to get it sorted.

Near Wells

I used to be an MOT tester. I was always amazed that bikers never noticed the rumbling wheel bearings or the oil all over the brake disc from leaking fork seals

My 1200 Bobber passed no problem last month. I never worry as I look after my bikes, Mrs F's bike also and keep them in tip top condition.

Use an MOT only place they are not looking for any other work and be glad of the strictness it may save you points or even your life. Serious bit over I've never worked out how a loud pipe and small number plate is a safety issue.

A small plate and loud exhaust is a legal issue not a safety one.

Loud pipe can make you deaf if you either don't wear ear plugs correctly, or don't wear them at all. Another health issue with loud pipes, is like an idiot by us, can get you beaten up for riding like an idiot at night and disturbing peoples sleep.

vera playa, Almeria

Here in Spain the itv (mot) lasts 2 years, took mine in recently and they seem more concerned with noise and emissions than safety. They put a sound detector behind the exhaust to check the dB isn't too loud and an emission probe like cars do in the UK. A quick glance at the tyres, no checking of bearings (wheel, swingarm or headstock) and a quick brake test, he only checked the indicators on one side for some reason and that's it for another 2 years.

Ape here. Mine has loud pipes on it and has done since I bought it. Not failed an MOT yet. I did ask my garage and they said the noise does mean a fail but it still passed as they know most of the time loud pipes will just be put on again after.

That sounds like a decent mot station.

I prefer to hide them in a cloud of two stroke oil
