Just got my full A a couple of months back & looking for some recommendations as to what first bike to pull the trigger on.

Looking to do a bit of touring round wales so needs to be reasonably comfy, but it still needs to be fun. Thinking Honda cb650 at the mo, or possibly a street triple if I can find one cheap - be great to hear some thoughts!

Yeah cheers, I’ve been trawling local dealers a bit but in a way there’s a bit too much choice for my indecisive mind!

As for the SV1000 I’ve not tried anything over 600cc yet, so a bit unsure how the extra weight/power actually handles on the road? SV650 is already something i’d been considering, so I’ll have to see if I can find one locally to have a look at.

As a first time big bike you want something cheap, as you will drop it or come off at sometime, its all part of the learning curve. A bandit 600 or 650 would be a good start, cheap to run , easy to get parts for and a good strong engine, just get one that's not modified, the 600's don't like cone air filters, so avoid them at all cost....

Yeah, that’s been something I’m trying weigh up - go all out on something amazing or pick up an absolute nail that I won’t have to worry about dropping.

Just excited to get something in time for the good weather, so guess as long as whatever I pick up holds it’s value I can’t go too far wrong!

Couldn't agree more. Mrs F had one when we used to do a bit of touring and camping. She loved it

You won't go far wrong with an SV650 or maybe an MT07. Both fun bikes

SV650 is a great bike to learn how to handle a bigger bike and being a V twin is very easy to ride. SV1000 is a big step up and is deceptively quick and could get you into a lot of trouble very easily.

Don't rush to have a big engined bike that scares the crap out of you....

CB OR CBR650 are more or less the same bike, and either would make a good first bike. I had an old CBR600 for a few years and it was brilliant.

I’ve now got an SV650S which is a really great bike, I test rode an SV1000 a few years ago, and it was a superb bike, but very very quick. And as has been said could easily get you into a lot of trouble very quickly.

Or an MT09 or tracer...can pick them up reasonable price. Great engine, light and fun to ride. Quick too when you want it to be but not scary fast tho.

I have a tracer9gt,if brilliant, very comfortable for long journeys and you can really open it up on the Twisties, great fun and not too heavy on the juice either would highly recommend it

I went all out and got a Ktm 790 adventure as my first big bike and I love it. The weight is low handles great on the road and goes the best off road and you can learn and grow into. Power and speed is definitely far from a problem and comfort is spot on. The bike will get dropped but professionals drop adventure bikes even off road that’s why you get can get bars etc to protect it or plastics is cheap to replace and most adventure bikes are the same Yamaha T7 etc

I Know someone who has had a CBR650R for a few years and he says it`s a great all rounder for touring etc & decent power.

V-Strom 650 is also a good bike. Try to get a few test rides at some dealers.

My first bike was/is a Kawasaki Vulcan S and has happily carried me around the UK and Europe - it's also my only transport and has seen me well for 3yrs and 45k miles.

But I have just posted about recommendations for another bike as well so....
