I have a road bike but am thinking of getting a bike for greenlaning. Any suggestions of suitable bikes?

There's not a lot in the way of green lanes around the Herts area that I know of and I've tried a few maps. Honda. CRF250L or CRF250Rally are the obvious ones for starting off. Road legal to get you to the lane and then light and placcid when you get there.

There are hundreds of lanes in Herts, join the Trail Riders Fellowship and you get access to a UK wide map of all lanes. Herts is packed with them.

Get a Beta X Trainer, I think they are brilliant. A 300 2 stroke with low down torque like a 4 stroke.

It's quite light and a little bit l lower than most enduro bikes, plus it has an electric start. Ideal if you're new to green laming

If it's just light stuff (and you want something that stands out) then the Suzuki VanVan is pretty cool.

Also road legal and not too bad on beaches either

DRZ400SM (i think the wheels are swappable with the Enduro from memory)

WR250R/X or 400R

KTM EXC 450

If your new to green laning my opinion is go small people with a road riding back round all go straight for 450/500 which are brutal off road

If your new and this is only my opinion go 250 4 banger or even a 125/200 smoker

I have done b&b and enduros on both and found as the day has gone on the smaller bike I’m actually quicker on as it’s not trying to kill me

I did an off road day and the focus wasn't moto cross style. They used Royal Enfield Himalayas.

I did 70 miles a day on 12.5hp and did a bit of light green laning on my wr125 and it was fine tbh

For what we used then for they're absolutely fine. Talking b roads, grassy fields and muddy trails. Guy said that on the trips he organises it's rare you're going above 20mph anyway due to road quality. And that they're easy to spanner.

Much more comfortable to sit on for a the month trek. I think it's a different story of off roading is all.

Hi don’t wish to sound like I’m being rude have you done much off roading, if your a road rider turning to green laneing or off roading you will soon find that powerfull machines off road make you very tired quickly and just like big road bikes they can be trying to kill you often

You don’t need to hit a tree fast for it to do some real damage

Good luck but if your new see if you can try a few first plenty of places around

Apparently there's gonna be a new 300 4 poker Yammy WR coming

That's a seriously decent option if comes to fruition

Like said above A 450 or 500 + is just too much for UK let alone offroad virgins

I was used to 690 SMCs but doesnt mean I would opt for a knobbly version

Probs a 400 max

If your after reliability and easy to work on bike go beta 250 2stroke or 300 2stroke, the 250 is great starter bike and has more than enough go for proper racing events. It used to come with both kick and electric start but because electric is very reliable now the done away with kick but it’s an additional extra you can still purchase if needed. Also they come with separate 2stroke oil tank so no need for pre mixing like in the old days

Also consider the Sherco 300 4 stroke. A great all round bike. Parts are available in the UK and very reliable.

I've had big 4 strokes, screaming 300 2strokes done rally, hare and hounds and long weekends greenlaning. The Sherco does it all, its light and nimble, very easy to ride and very forgiving. Just buy post 2014 as the old fuel injection wasn't the best.

Get either a six days or Factory edition as they come with some high end components as standard including a full Akropovic exhaust.

I’ve only been off-roading with Landrovers, Bedford trucks and Fodens for 36 years. Both green laning and military service. But as for off road bikes I’ve only had a Montessa cota trials bike, Cagiva 350 t4, bmw gs 650 ( rare boxer one) Harley Davidson MT350 and Honda xr200r. I agree what you say regarding big bikes off-road. Smaller and lighter is better, but surely a small light machine with more power is better than one with less.
