Things are never simple, ordered 2 new tyres on Saturday, which will be fitted this coming Friday, anyways, took my wheels off yesterday for pending new tyres, well as it happens I’ve also ordered new chain n sprockets an discovered that the Cush drive rubbers were perished so I’ve ordered those as well, let’s just say I’m not telling the missus what I’ve spent.

Its easy done. I need to replace my swingarm gator and now it's evolved into propshaft bearings, crown and pinion bearings and rear seal.

Police were out in force today.

Even the panda cars were strategically placing themselves with radar guns at the villages.

Also noticed Lincs Constabulary have a new unmarked black Honda estate

And if the guy with the R1 cutting about Skegvegas main drag in nothing but a helmet, vest, jeans and trainers, yes the 30 or 40 of us that were parked up all think you are a prize wanker.

We did Willi Woods, mablethorpe & Skegvegas, then back to Coningsby. The unmarked Honda came past us on blues n twos, let’s just say the driver wasn’t the best when trying to get through the traffic, nearly took out front rider out.

The police bikes were being a bit sneaky n hiding too.

Gotta love the hard as nails dicks that ride with no protection.

On race bikes and sometimes on road bikes I use a cable tie on a fork tube to indicate and check suspension travel. Oh well, good practice when designing to make everything carry out more than one function to save parts and weight.

I did that once, brought the front end up and came down hard. The cable tie got stuck under the dust seal at an angle and ruined the nitride finish on the stantion.

A bit of water based red grease does the same, and it can be wiped off without damaging the seal.

Knockhill used to be good for doing set up days, especially mid week.

Cadwell you have to pre book on specific days which can be a pain.

Doing a track day with a qualified instructor is the best thing you can ever do.

I grew up with motorcross bikes so knew how to ride from an early age.

I thought I was a competent and experienced rider until my first track day at Knockhill.

Everything I was doing was wrong and was through habit.

Once I was ripped apart and shown what I was doing wrong, the instructor (Alex ex IOM rider) took me through everything and he shadowed me throughout the day.

I went back 4 times then went on the advanced weekend.

If you have never done one i cant recommended it enough.

I had a friend give me a C70 to look at back in 1990.

He bought it so he could run about the field with us.

Could not get the thing started for love nor money so sat at the back of my parents garage nearly 20 years.

When they had thier garden done, one of the land scapers bought it for £20.

I had forgot all about it until they told me they had sold it.

One of the most iconic bikes ever.

Did your dust seal come up to touch the bottom triple clamp then? That's the only time I've had that happen. Needed front raising, (pushing forks down through clamps), or more preload or a stiffer spring.

They were a set of USD forks from a 600 gixer.

The preload was wound right off hence the stantion used its full travel into the fork leg when the front end came down.

The dust seals were on the soft side hence it let the cable tie push past the seal.

Because the forks had the black nitride costing the scratch was really visible.

It cost me £400 to have the forks re-coated and rebuilt with better springs and valves but was worth the money.

"Ive just had my rear shock rebuilt. £170, sounds like I got of lighyly "

Shocks aren't that difficult to do yourself however you need the specific tools and compression clamp to do it correctly for the rear shocks anyway.

The more modern shocks use air or nitrogen accumulation. These need vacuumed and bled before being gassed.

Linked forks are the worst. Spring and piston on one leg and damping and gas chamber in the other.

A set of standard sprung forks with oil dampening can be done with a bench and a decent vise with soft jaws.

Suspension is a bit of a black art, especially the set up if your doing it yourself.

The difference it can make is actually quite amazing.

I got my shock done by a pro as its full of gas and oil and magic, or in my case, the seals had blown and the oil and gas long since gone.

Thankfully both my other bikes have got non adjustable front suspension, so they're easy enough. Mind you when I did the fork seals on my rocket 3 I wasn't saying how easy it was at the time
