Hi just bought a BMW K 1200 for nostalgic reasons . Is there anyone around with advice on does and don’ts with them and what’s the typical mpg for just tootling around?

If your ABS is working change your brake fluid at least every two years. Pumps at expensive even to repair let alone replace, if your fuel gauge sender doesn’t work you can try zapping it to wake it up. Not sure on mpg or your knowledge but don’t think shafts are maintenance free as many seem to.

Not owned one but worked on a few & own an older K bike among others.

Get the shaft serviced. Only use someone familiar with BMWs. Too many use the wrong grease which travels up from the splines resulting in excessive spline wear.

Start the bike and listen closely to the engine. If you hear a noise like a chain thrashing, you'll need to replace the cam chain tensioner and poor idling means a new idle solenoid.

Lastly, watch the oil closely. Excessive consumption usually means new valve guides.

Accept that it's not a sportsbike and don't try to ride it like one. It's meant for covering big miles on motorways and A-roads and you'll be laughing. You can do big miles in relative comfort. Just make sure to pay attention when setting the saddle height.

I've a k12000s . If it's a rattle, see if it's had it's recall done to fit a cam chain tensioner. Or anything else. Get your vin number and send it to your nearest dealer and they can Check

Be prepared for a fuel leak on the right hand side from the plastic fuel pipe connectors. They get brittle with heat and age and then fracture.
