Best smaller bike?

I have nothing against bigger bikes (I own some), but I have a certain nostalgia for the smaller capacity bikes, lots of fun and cheap. I actually prefer one for small commutes, and there is some joy in getting 140mpg from a 125. Do you have any favourites, old or new?

My first was a 2015 Honda cb125f. It was a great wee bike. Traded it in for my current bike, cb500. Which is another cracking and underrated bike.

I alway wanted a Cagiva Mito 125.

But for full on no messing about small capacity bikes the CG125 is hard to beat.

I like the idea of a fifty however the weight to power ratio would be an issue now lol

CG is industructable

Ybr are very easy to ride and very reliable (loads of CBT centers use them)

Ajs seem very well put together and very good to ride

If I could, I'd get another VanVan- passed my test on mine and only got rid because I didn't have space for two bikes and wanted something bigger when I passed test.

Easily customised and with a little tweaking could spend all day cruising at 60

I came to biking late in life and started out with a suzuki gn125, what a great bike it was. Light, manoeuvrable and so easy to ride. My son took it on when I passed my test and got a bigger bike but then when he went to uni I had to sell it, only plus was I got more for it than when I bought it!! I really wish I'd kept it now.

Makes for an absolutely epic living room ornament though.

There was a race bike for sale on car and classic a few years ago. Came with two engines and tons of spares, including two sets of carbon fibre fairings.

It was selling for £20,000 which was well out my league at the time.

I think part of it is the nostalgia of the smaller bikes we learned to ride on, the sense of freedom and independence, but I also love utilitarian bikes, ones that are designed to move people and things as cheaply as possible and that are cheap and easy to maintain. The Honda C90 springs to mind, nothing exciting about it at all, but what a piece of workman-like engineering!

Had a Honda 50 that I bought new in 70’s and went twice around the clock (20k miles) in less than 2 years. Great fun....wish I had it now. Then had Honda CB 250. Also had a Honda CB125SJ. Travelled almost every county in Ireland. Donegal to Wexford, West Cork to Antrim. Never let me down.

Currently have Honda CB400/4 (1976) with 85K miles. 10 years ago I traveled to Switzerland and back and it never missed a beat.

I have a Honda CBX250 Twister (I think it's called Honda CBF 250 Twister in every country except South Africa, Brazil and India).

Bought it in 2012. Rode it almost everyday for about 3 years. Less so after that, mainly because I needed to portray a particular image for my job. Two years ago I parked it in my garage and basically forgot about it.

I had it serviced this past weekend, that motor is practically bullet proof and only the carbs needed ckeanin. I've been riding it the last few days again. Wonderful. I don't think I will ever sell my little thumper.

Had an ar80 as a teenager and loved it .biggrr bikes now but mrs has a 2012 van van and as saìd above its a hoot to ride so comfy and chuckable around town i pinch it all the time

Love little tiddler bikes . Yup Mito,s when you can find a good one , same as RS Aprilia . Yamaha DT 125 are a big fav of mine , although presently i own a couple of Honda XR 125 s an old 83 and a much more modern one ..I ride enduro / MX and have gone back to 125s finding them more manageable as i get older ..

My absolute favorite of all time though and the one i would have back is a Suzuki Tsx125 ..full 22 bhp .. Now that was an awesome bike

RD125dx was my favourite small bike and a 350lc was a great bike to ride - wish I still had mine.

Back out on my mk1 bandit for now but will be replacing my GSXS1000 very soon (got written of by driver not paying attention!).

Great little bike I still have one(67plate), only put 74 miles on it since I bought it in October. Kind of a spur of the moment thing as it was cheap but have no real use for it

I was always too big for them, but I had a go on my mates TZR125R. It had the power valve motor fitted, it made it interesting when you clipped cats eyes with an open throttle.

I used a CD125 a long while ago, the exhausts had been chopped off and replaced with straight through pipes, it rattled like hell but was a fun bike to ride.

My bikes were:

MZ Simson 50 - great bike, would beat most 100cc bikes to 40mph and would do 50mph if you lay flat on the tank

Honda 125 superdream

Kawasaki GPz 305

Kawasaki KLE 500

Sold them all unfortunately.

Looking at the new Honda Cub 125, or the "Hunter Cub" when it is released. Or may get a KTM 390 Adventure.
